Preparation Steps
- Generously butter a 9x13-inch baking dish using about 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter to coat the bottom and sides thoroughly.
- Layer sliced French bread in a single, slightly overlapping layer across the bottom of the dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 5 large eggs, 1 cup of half-and-half, 1 cup of whole milk, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 2/3 cup of granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg until completely smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the prepared bread, pressing down with a spatula, then cover and refrigerate overnight.
- The next day, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), remove plastic wrap, dot with small butter pieces, and sprinkle sugar on top.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool for 10 minutes, then sprinkle more sugar and caramelize with a kitchen torch.
- Slice into servings, drizzle with warm maple syrup, and serve immediately.
