A delicious copycat recipe for the famous Whataburger Patty Melt, featuring juicy beef patties, grilled onions, and a creamy pepper sauce, all sandwiched between buttery Texas toast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp pickle juice
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 8 slices Texas toast or thick-cut white bread
  • 4 slices Monterey Jack cheese
  • 4 slices Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter, for grilling

Instructions

  1. Make the sauce: Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and black pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Cook the onions: Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden.
  3. Prepare the patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 portions and shape into thin, rectangular patties slightly larger than the bread. Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  4. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until they reach 160°F (71°C) internally.
  5. Butter one side of each bread slice.
  6. Spread the creamy pepper sauce on the unbuttered sides of the bread.
  7. Assemble each sandwich with a beef patty, grilled onions, Monterey Jack, and Cheddar.
  8. Place the sandwiches butter-side down in a skillet over medium heat. Cook for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  9. Slice in half and serve hot with extra sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, consider adding jalapeños to the sandwiches.
  • Feel free to substitute the cheeses based on your preference.
  • Ensure the beef patties are cooked to the recommended internal temperature for safety.
