- 2 slices of sourdough bread
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 4 ounces ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 1 slice American cheese
- 1 slice cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: pickles, ketchup, or mustard for serving
- Preheat a skillet over medium heat.
- Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread.
- Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet.
- Form the ground beef into a ball and place it on top of the bread in the skillet.
- Using a spatula, smash the beef ball down to create a thin patty. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook the patty for about 3-4 minutes until a crust forms, then flip it over.
- Immediately place the American cheese and cheddar cheese on top of the patty.
- Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
- Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, pressing down gently with the spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Remove from the skillet and let it cool for a minute before slicing in half. Serve with optional condiments if desired.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add sautéed onions or jalapeños between the cheese and the patty.
- Use different types of cheese, such as pepper jack or gouda, for a unique twist on the classic grilled cheese.
