Ingredients
Scale
500 g beef sirloin, flank steak, or ribeye, thinly sliced
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp sesame oil
½ tsp black pepper
1 tbsp vegetable oil, for frying
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tsp brown sugar
¼ tsp salt
3 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp honey or brown sugar
1 tbsp rice vinegar
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
½ tsp sesame oil
60 ml beef broth or water
1 tsp cornstarch
2 green onions, sliced
1 tsp sesame seeds
Fresh cilantro, optional
Red pepper flakes, optional
Instructions
Marinate the beef: Place the sliced beef in a bowl. Add soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and black pepper. Toss well and let it marinate for 10–15 minutes.
Caramelize the onions: Heat butter and vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and salt. Cook for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and deeply golden. Add the brown sugar during the last 2 minutes. Transfer the onions to a plate.
Make the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, beef broth, and cornstarch.
Sear the beef: Increase the skillet heat to medium-high and add the vegetable oil. Add the beef in a single layer, working in batches if necessary. Stir-fry for 2–4 minutes, until browned and just cooked through.
Combine: Return the caramelized onions to the skillet. Pour in the sauce and toss everything together.
Thicken: Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce becomes glossy and coats the beef and onions.
Garnish: Sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds. Add red pepper flakes if you like some heat.
Serve: Serve immediately over steamed white rice, brown rice, or noodles.
Notes
For a spicier version, add more red pepper flakes.
