Ingredients
Scale
2 large eggs
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
4 slices of white bread
4 slices of ham
4 slices of turkey or chicken
4 slices of Swiss cheese
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
Vegetable oil for frying
Powdered sugar for dusting
Jelly or jam (such as raspberry or strawberry) for serving
Instructions
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
Lay out 2 slices of bread and layer each with 2 slices of ham, 2 slices of turkey or chicken, and 2 slices of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread to form 2 sandwiches.
Carefully dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated. Let any excess drip off.
In a separate shallow dish, combine the flour and breadcrumbs. Dredge each sandwich in the flour mixture, coating both sides evenly.
In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the sandwiches to the skillet. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Dust the sandwiches with powdered sugar before slicing them in half. Serve warm with jelly or jam on the side for dipping.
Notes
For a twist, try using different types of cheese like cheddar or pepper jack for added flavor.
You can also make a sweet version by adding a layer of fruit preserves inside the sandwich before frying.
