Ingredients
Scale
500 g ground beef
1 small onion, finely diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp tomato paste
120 ml beef broth
1 tsp Dijon mustard
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp Italian seasoning
4–6 hamburger buns or brioche buns
6 slices provolone cheese
1 tbsp butter, for toasting buns
Optional: sliced mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, or extra sautéed onions
Instructions
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess grease if necessary.
Add the butter, diced onion, and bell pepper. Cook for about 4–5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
Stir in Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Dijon mustard, beef broth, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and Italian seasoning.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and becomes saucy.
Place the provolone slices over the beef mixture. Cover the skillet for 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts. Stir gently to distribute the melted cheese.
Butter the cut sides of the buns and toast them in a skillet until lightly golden.
Spoon the cheesy beef mixture generously onto the toasted buns. Add extra melted provolone if desired.
Notes
For the ultimate Philly-style flavor, add sautéed mushrooms and onions before topping with the melted provolone.
