A delightful and easy recipe for Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of thick-cut brioche or challah bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing the baking dish)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with the butter. Arrange the slices of brioche or challah in a single layer in the dish, slightly overlapping if necessary.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring each slice is soaked. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours) to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top of the soaked bread.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  7. For a crispy top, broil the dish for an additional 2-3 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
  8. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Optionally, serve with fresh berries, whipped cream, or maple syrup.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider mixing in some orange or lemon zest into the custard mixture.
  • You can substitute the brioche or challah with sourdough or whole grain bread for a different texture and taste.
