Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ lbs flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil, for frying
  • ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 4 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Slice the flank steak thinly against the grain into bite-sized strips. Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  2. Coat the Beef: In a large bowl, season the beef with salt and black pepper. Add cornstarch and toss until each piece is lightly coated. Shake off any excess.
  3. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, water, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
  4. Cook the Beef: Heat 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the beef in batches, spreading it into a single layer. Cook for 1–2 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate.
  5. Stir-Fry the Vegetables: Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the same skillet. Add sliced onion and bell peppers. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
  6. Add the Sauce: Pour the prepared Mongolian sauce into the skillet. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  7. Combine Everything: Return the cooked beef to the skillet. Toss well to coat every piece with the glossy sauce.
  8. Add Green Onions: Stir in the green onions and cook for another 1 minute until slightly softened.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, increase the amount of red pepper flakes.
  • Serve with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
