Ingredients
Scale
1½ lb ground beef
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
¼ cup finely diced onion
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, for cooking
1 cup beef broth
½ cup pineapple juice
¼ cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons cold water
½ cup sliced onion
½ cup pineapple chunks
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Divide the mixture into 4–5 portions and shape each into a thick oval or round patty. Don’t overwork the meat to keep the steaks juicy.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the hamburger steaks for 4–5 minutes per side, until browned. Transfer to a plate.
In the same skillet, sauté the sliced onion for 2–3 minutes until softened.
Add the beef broth, pineapple juice, ketchup, brown sugar, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer.
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Add the pineapple chunks, cover, and simmer for 8–10 minutes, or until the beef reaches 160°F internally.
Mix the cornstarch with cold water in a small bowl. Slowly stir the slurry into the gravy.
Simmer uncovered for 2–3 minutes, stirring gently, until the gravy thickens and becomes glossy.
Spoon the Hawaiian gravy, onions, and pineapple over the hamburger steaks.
Notes
Serve over hot white rice for a complete meal.
Adjust the sweetness of the gravy by varying the amount of brown sugar.
For added flavor, consider using fresh pineapple chunks.
