A delicious homemade sausage pizza with a crispy crust, savory sauce, and a blend of cheeses.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups (375 g) bread flour
  • 2¼ tsp (7 g) instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup (240 ml) pizza sauce or marinara sauce
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 lb (450 g) Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 2½ cups (280 g) shredded whole milk mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup (50 g) freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp dried basil
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for brushing the crust)
  • Optional toppings: sliced mushrooms, sliced black olives, diced bell peppers, thinly sliced red onions, pepperoni, fresh basil, crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the warm water and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the sausage, breaking it into small crumbles, until browned and fully cooked (7–8 minutes). Drain any excess grease and set aside.
  6. Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a pizza stone or baking sheet in the oven while it preheats.
  7. Punch down the dough and roll or stretch it into a 14-inch circle. Transfer to a piece of parchment paper or a lightly floured pizza peel.
  8. Mix the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes into the pizza sauce. Spread the sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge.
  9. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese over the sauce, evenly distribute the cooked sausage, and add any optional toppings. Top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Brush the outer crust lightly with olive oil.
  10. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly browned.
  11. Sprinkle with oregano, basil, or fresh basil leaves if desired. Let the pizza rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, bake on a preheated pizza stone.
  • Feel free to customize toppings based on your preference.
  • Letting the dough rise longer can enhance the flavor.
