A comforting casserole made with ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and a rich homemade gravy, topped with melted cheddar cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1½ lbs ground beef
  • 5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the ground beef and garlic. Cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease.
  4. Season the beef with paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Make the gravy: Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and milk until smooth. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and black pepper.
  7. Simmer for 4–5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens. Taste and adjust the salt if needed.
  8. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  9. Spread half of the seasoned beef over the potatoes.
  10. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and beef.
  11. Pour the gravy evenly over the entire casserole, making sure it reaches the potatoes.
  12. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  13. Remove the foil and sprinkle the cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  14. Bake uncovered for another 10–15 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and golden.
  15. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Slice the potatoes as evenly and thinly as possible so they cook at the same rate. A mandoline makes this especially easy.
