Ingredients
Scale
1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 large onions, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
¼ cup soy sauce
2 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
½ cup beef broth
1 tbsp cornstarch
2 tbsp cold water
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp sesame oil
2 green onions, sliced
Instructions
Prepare the beef: Toss the sliced beef with 1 tbsp soy sauce and black pepper. Let it marinate for 10–15 minutes.
Make the sauce: Whisk together the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, beef broth, cornstarch, and cold water.
Cook the beef: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Stir-fry the beef for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
Cook the onions: Add the remaining oil. Stir-fry the onions for 3–4 minutes until softened but still slightly crisp. Add garlic and ginger and cook for 30 seconds.
Combine: Return the beef to the skillet and pour in the sauce. Toss everything together and cook for 1–2 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
Finish: Stir in sesame oil and sprinkle with green onions.
Notes
Serve hot over steamed white rice.
Adjust the level of sweetness by varying the amount of brown sugar.
For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes or sliced chili peppers.
