Ingredients
Scale
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
½ cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
½ teaspoon salt
1 large egg
¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup heavy whipping cream
½ cup berry jam (such as raspberry or strawberry)
Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Add the flour, ground cardamom, salt, egg, and softened butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Cover the buns with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.
While the buns are cooling, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
Once the buns are cool, slice the tops off and hollow out a bit of the inside. Fill each bun with a spoonful of berry jam and a generous dollop of whipped cream. Replace the tops and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the whipped cream.
You can also substitute the berry jam with lemon curd or chocolate spread for a different twist.
