A delicious and hearty Southern-style baked beans recipe featuring savory bacon and a sweet tangy sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) navy beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup cooked bacon, chopped (about 68 slices)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the navy beans, chopped bacon, and diced onion.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, ketchup, barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, mustard powder, garlic powder, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  4. Pour the sauce mixture over the bean and bacon mixture, stirring gently to combine.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the beans are bubbly and the top is slightly caramelized.
  8. Let the baked beans cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a smoky flavor, consider adding 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika to the sauce mixture.
  • You can substitute turkey bacon for a lighter option, or use vegetarian bacon for a meat-free version.
