Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup milk
1 large egg
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, sliced
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
2 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined. Form the mixture into 4 equal patties.
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and mushrooms. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms are tender.
Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Stir the slurry into the broth and cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
Return the hamburger patties to the skillet, spooning the sauce over them. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through.
Serve the smothered hamburger steaks hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
Notes
For a spicy kick, add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the beef mixture.
Serve over mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
