Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, diced
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
8 slices of American cheese
4 tablespoons butter
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
Heat a separate skillet or griddle over medium heat. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
Place 4 slices of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet. Top each with a slice of American cheese, followed by a generous scoop of the Sloppy Joe mixture, and another slice of cheese.
Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up. Cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, then carefully flip and cook the other side until golden and the cheese is melted, about another 3-4 minutes.
Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.
Notes
For a spicier kick, add a teaspoon of hot sauce to the Sloppy Joe mixture.
Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version of the dish.
