A delicious twist on the classic Sloppy Joe, this Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese combines savory ground beef with melty American cheese between crispy, buttery bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
  • 8 slices of American cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  2. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Heat a separate skillet or griddle over medium heat. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  4. Place 4 slices of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet. Top each with a slice of American cheese, followed by a generous scoop of the Sloppy Joe mixture, and another slice of cheese.
  5. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up. Cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, then carefully flip and cook the other side until golden and the cheese is melted, about another 3-4 minutes.
  6. Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a teaspoon of hot sauce to the Sloppy Joe mixture.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version of the dish.
