A hearty recipe for Rich Onion Gravy Salisbury Steaks, featuring flavorful beef patties smothered in a rich onion gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 1 inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook over medium heat until softened and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine, cooking for an additional minute.
  6. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add soy sauce and thyme, and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  7. Return the patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  8. Serve the Salisbury steaks topped with the rich onion gravy.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey for the beef and use whole wheat breadcrumbs.
  • For added flavor, mix in a tablespoon of Dijon mustard into the beef mixture before forming the patties.
