A classic Italian sandwich featuring layers of meats, cheeses, and a tangy olive salad, perfect for gatherings and picnics.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round loaf of Italian bread (about 1012 inches in diameter)
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 pound sliced salami
  • 1/2 pound sliced ham
  • 1/2 pound sliced mortadella
  • 1/2 pound sliced provolone cheese
  • 1/2 pound sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup olive salad (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Slice the Italian bread in half horizontally. Hollow out some of the inside of the bread to create space for the fillings.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes.
  3. Brush the olive oil mixture generously on the cut sides of the bread.
  4. Layer the salami, ham, mortadella, provolone, and mozzarella on the bottom half of the bread.
  5. Spoon the olive salad evenly over the cheeses and meats.
  6. Place the top half of the bread on the sandwich and press down gently.
  7. Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  8. Before serving, slice the sandwich into wedges and enjoy.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute the meats with grilled vegetables and add extra cheese.
  • Experiment with different types of olives in the olive salad for a unique flavor twist.
