A delicious and hearty Monte Cristo Breakfast Casserole that combines layers of bread, ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, perfect for a family breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup sliced deli ham
  • 1 cup sliced turkey or chicken
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for serving)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and evenly distribute half of the cubes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Layer the ham and turkey or chicken over the bread cubes in the baking dish, followed by the remaining bread cubes.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread and meats, ensuring all the bread is soaked. Press down gently to help the bread absorb the liquid.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese on top of the casserole.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the casserole is set and golden brown on top.
  8. Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with maple syrup.

Notes

  • For a sweeter version, add a handful of fresh berries or sliced bananas to the layers before baking.
  • Substitute the meats with cooked bacon or sausage for a different flavor profile.
