Layered Custard Baklava with Nuts and Honey Syrup is a delightful dessert that combines crispy phyllo dough, rich custard, and a sweet honey syrup, perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups phyllo dough (thawed)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 cup walnuts (chopped)
  • 1 cup pistachios (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts, chopped pistachios, ground cinnamon, and 1 cup of granulated sugar. Set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, honey, and remaining 1 cup of granulated sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let cool.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth. Set aside.
  5. Layer 5 sheets of phyllo dough in the prepared baking dish, brushing each layer with melted butter. Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Repeat the layering process (5 sheets of phyllo, then nuts) until half of the nut mixture is used.
  6. Pour half of the custard mixture over the layered nuts. Continue layering with 5 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, followed by the remaining nut mixture. Pour the remaining custard over the top.
  7. Finish with 5 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter. Cut the baklava into diamond shapes with a sharp knife.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and immediately pour the cooled honey syrup over the hot baklava. Allow to cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg to the nut mixture.
  • You can substitute the nuts with your favorite combination, such as almonds or pecans, for a different taste.
