Crispy Orange Chicken is a delicious dish featuring bite-sized pieces of chicken coated in a crispy batter and tossed in a tangy orange sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs.
  3. Place cornstarch in a third bowl.
  4. Dip each piece of chicken first into the flour mixture, then into the beaten eggs, and finally coat with cornstarch.
  5. In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot (about 350°F).
  6. Fry the chicken in batches until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per batch. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  7. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.
  8. Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
  9. Add sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes, if using.
  10. Toss the fried chicken in the orange sauce until well coated.
  11. Serve immediately over steamed rice or with stir-fried vegetables.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, use chicken breast instead of thighs and bake the chicken at 400°F for 20-25 minutes instead of frying.
  • For added flavor, garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving.
