Crispy Homemade Mongolian Beef is a delicious and easy-to-make dish featuring tender beef coated in a crispy layer, tossed in a sweet and savory sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 3 green onions, sliced (white and green parts separated)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the sliced flank steak with cornstarch until evenly coated. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow the cornstarch to adhere.
  2. In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the beef in a single layer and cook for 2-3 minutes until crispy and browned. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the minced garlic, minced ginger, and the white parts of the green onions. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the soy sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes (if using) to the skillet. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
  5. Return the crispy beef to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  6. Garnish with the green parts of the sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, you can use chicken breast instead of flank steak.
  • To add some vegetables, toss in bell peppers or broccoli during the last few minutes of cooking.
