Cheesy Patty Melts with Special Sauce is a delicious sandwich featuring juicy beef patties topped with melted Swiss cheese and a tangy special sauce, all sandwiched between crispy rye or pumpernickel bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices of rye or pumpernickel bread
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, then form into 4 equal patties.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.
  3. While the patties are cooking, prepare the special sauce by mixing together the mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, hot sauce (if using), and paprika in a small bowl. Set aside.
  4. Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. In the same skillet used for the patties, place two slices of bread, buttered side down.
  5. Top each slice of bread with a cheesy patty and a generous amount of special sauce. Place the other two slices of bread on top, buttered side up.
  6. Cook the sandwiches for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Press down gently with a spatula to ensure even toasting.
  7. Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve warm with extra special sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add sliced jalapeños to the patty before cooking or mix some crushed red pepper flakes into the beef mixture.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version, and use cheddar cheese for a different flavor profile.
