Delicious Baked Italian Grinder Sandwiches filled with a savory meat mixture and topped with melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
  • 8 hoagie rolls
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the Italian sausage and ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the marinara sauce and stir to combine. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
  6. Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through. Place them on a baking sheet.
  7. Spoon the meat mixture evenly into each hoagie roll. Top each with a slice of provolone cheese and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Remove from the oven and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute turkey sausage for Italian sausage.
  • You can also add sliced mushrooms or olives to the meat mixture for extra flavor and texture.
